Egypt will receive on Friday the chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China (G-77/China) for year 2018, in a ceremony that is scheduled to be held at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York.
Egyptian Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Amr Aboulatta will be handed over the chairmanship form Ecuador that chaired the G-77/China during the past year.
Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said that Egypt’s chairmanship of the G-77/China comes in a critical phase involving multilateral action especially within the framework of the United Nations in light of its current phase of reform.
Such move would enable Egypt to represent wise stance of the member states of the group as well as causes of the developing countries in various economic, social and environment fields, he noted.
The G77 is the largest negotiating forum of the developing countries in the UN which aims to enhance the economic and development interests of such countries, he added.
The post is a new platform that highlights the role of the Egyptian diplomacy in 2018, and a chance to build on what Egypt has achieved within the framework of its membership in the UN Security Council and the AU Peace and Security Council, he further said.
He pointed out that, during Egypt’s chairmanship of the G77, it intends to give momentum to the issues pertaining to the youth and development, especially in countries with high percent of youth. (MENA)
