Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on Tuesday said that Egypt is one of the first countries that is undertaking its duties towards the file of refugees.
The remark was made at a meeting with Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
Shoukry added that the Egyptian stance comes out of legal and ethical considerations and has nothing to do with any political interests.
He underlined the importance of allocating more funds for the commissioner’s office in Egypt to help the country shoulder these burdens, according to Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid.
The Egyptian top diplomat appreciated the important role played by the commissioner’s office in Egypt, added the spokesman.
Egypt is providing the suitable environment for refugees and not isolating them in refugee camps, the spokesman quoted Shoukry as saying at the meeting.
Egypt has merged the refugees into the Egyptian society and they are sharing the Egyptian citizens public services especially in the sectors of education and health care, Shoukry pointed out.
For his part, Grandi appreciated the immense efforts and services extended by Egypt for refugees on its soil describing them as an example to be followed by other countries, added the spokesman. (MENA)
