Egypt’s former Prime Minister, Ahmed Shafiq, announced on Sunday his decision for not running for president in Egypt.
Shafiq put an end to the controversy that has arisen since he announced his desire to run for office in the UAE.
Last month, Shafiq held a meeting with leaders of his party to discuss whether or not to run for the presidential elections in Egypt. This came in a statement issued by National Movement which headed by Shafiq’s.
The statement issued by the meeting confirmed that this decision comes in the framework of the group’s consultation sessions with a number of public figures and party leaders, to issue a final decision regarding the presidential elections.
On November 29, Shafiq, 76, in a televised address from his residence in the UAE, announced his intention to compete in the 2018 elections.
