American newspapers keep acting in unprofessional manners, only to serve the best interests of those who want to destabilize Egypt, probably the only Arab state that succeeded in avoiding the wars raging on in most Arab countries.
The New York Times ran a report recently in which it claimed that unmarked Israeli drones had carried out more than 100 strikes inside Sinai. Other American newspapers run similar reports, all with the aim of destabilizing Egypt.
Alexandria Deputy Governor
On August 28, 2017, the Associated Press ran a report about the involvement of a senior official in the coastal city of Alexandria in a case of corruption.
The American news agency mistakenly described the deputy Alexandria governor in the report which was titled “Egypt detains senior official in corruption case”, as the most senior government official to be arrested to date for involvement in corruption.
The report aimed to give the impression that Egypt is full of corruption. Nonetheless, the agency described corruption charges against other government officials later as “falsified”.
Egypt and Qatar
On August 28, the American news network, CNN, ran a report against the background of the deadlock over Qatar’s financing of terrorism. The report focused on statements by Saif bin Ahmed al-Thani, the director of the Qatari government’s Communications Office, in which he denied links between his government and the Muslim Brotherhood. Al-Thani even denounced Egyptian reports about the presence of these links.
Egyptian army
The New York Times ran a report in which it claimed that Israel had carried out more than 100 strikes by unmarked drones in Sinai in agreement with Egyptian authorities.
The strikes, it said, were launched in North Sinai, in the border area between the Egyptian territory and Israel, targeting elements of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
Egyptian reaction
Egypt had always downplayed such reports. Nevertheless, the Foreign Ministry and the army used to issue statements to denounce them.
Commenting on the latest report by the American newspaper, army spokesman, Col. Tamer al-Rifae, said it is the Egyptian army only that carries out operations inside Sinai.
“The same is true to all Egyptian territories,” he told al-Bawaba News.
He said counterterrorism operations in Sinai are carried out by army troops in cooperation with civilian police.
He called on international media to report the facts accurately and get information from credible and official sources only.
