Days after the introduction of what was known as the economic rescue study submitted by the Islamic Action Front party, the branch of the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan, the Jordanian government, represented by its president, Omar Al-Razzaz, did not comment on the Brotherhood’s proposal, which was promoted by news websites and pro-Brotherhood channels in Qatar.
Brotherhood escalation
Since the commissioning of Al-Razzaz to form the government in July 2018, the Jordan Brotherhood has taken a progressive approach against it, as the Islamic Action Front party has on more than one occasion demanded the fall of the government and the formation of a national salvation government.
In all escalations that end to nothing, the Brotherhood will resort to what they call it political initiatives and economic studies to show that the group participates in political life.
In early April 2020, Murad Al-Adayleh, Secretary-General of the Islamic Action Front, announced that his party had presented a “methodology of recovery for the national economy”, which is a brotherhood study that tries to impose the group’s vision on the work of the government to provide opinion and advice to the decision-maker to get out of this crisis, and dealing with its extreme negative effects on the economic and social situation, according to specialized scientific and economic studies.
The Secretary General relied on the economic losses that the world is facing as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, and he said during an interview with the Jordanian Yarmouk channel that the Executive Office supports official efforts in the face of the epidemic, and that this study presented by the party, stems from what he called the national responsibility towards what is going on in the nation at this moment, which requires a state of unity and participatory, and that this stage represents an important opportunity for the state to depend on itself.
Study scenarios
The study presented three expected scenarios, according to several studies, and the best scenario speaks of a decline in GDP, from 31.9 billion dinars to about 29.1 billion dinars, an estimated loss of 2.8 billion dinars, and a loss of about 102,000 people for their jobs.
Government disregard
In this regard, the Jordanian writer, Maher Abu Tair, said, “The climate of temporary calm between the Brotherhood and the state was subjected to a major setback, when the Brotherhood refused to interfere in the teachers’ strike crisis, which lasted for several months, as they totally refused to intervene to stop the strike, or to soften the union leaders, who are linked to the group, with a bloc, not a small group of teachers, are affected by the Brotherhood’s tendencies.”
He pointed out that this position has had a severe negative impact on the relationship of the two parties, especially, with government officials considered that the group – and in a sensitive time – has decided to assist the government; what may explain the official authorities’ neglect of what the Islamists offer.
