BERLIN (The Reference) – Al-Jazeera English ran a report recently about the conditions of Muslims in the northeastern Greek city of Komotini.
As usual, the biased Qatari channel started the report by defending the ideology of the Turkish ruling Justice and Development Party.
Al-Jazeera has already become a mouthpiece of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Muslim Brotherhood group. It spreads the lies propagated by both day and night.
It claimed in its report that Komotini’s Muslims live in inappropriate conditions. The claims contradict all the realities of the life of the Muslims of the Greek city.
“I am not surprised that the dictatorial state of Qatar, which backed ISIS in the past, is putting its full weight behind Turkish claims about the Muslims of Komotini,” a Greek journalist said.
He said over 150,000 Muslims live in Komotini and the northeastern Thrace region. He noted that the Muslims of the region belong to a wide range of ethnicities, the thing al-Jazeera failed to mention.
Around 50% of the Muslims of Thrace are ethnic Turks, according to the Greek government in early 1990.
It said 35% of these Muslims are ethnic Pomak and 15% are Romani people.
Nevertheless, al-Jazeera claimed in its report that all the 150,000 Muslims who live in Thrace region are ethnic Turks.
Greek citizens reacted angrily to the broadcast of the region, accusing al-Jazeera of propagating lies.
“The al-Jazeera reporter who visited the region did not see the children wearing the traditional Turkish dresses very freely inside its cultural centers,” one of these citizens said.
The children, he added, listen to traditional Turkish music without any problems.
Al-Jazeera describes the Muslims of Thrace as a Turkish Muslim minority, which is totally unfounded. These Muslims are fully-fledged Greek citizens, not a minority. They enjoy the same rights of other members of the Greek society, Greek citizens said.
“Greek Muslims are Greek citizens after all,” said Mustafa Mustafa, a Greek Muslim himself. “The Muslims living in northern Greece were hoping to function as a cultural bridge and a bridge of peace with everybody.”
Erdogan views himself as a Caliph of Muslims and the legitimate inheritor of the Ottoman heritage. He dreams of bringing the former Ottoman Empire back to life by bringing the states that were occupied by this empire under his control.
This is why he keeps talking about what he describes as “minorities” in all countries in order to justify his interference in these countries.
Erdogan built a military base in Qatar and another in Sudan under the ousted Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir. He interferes in Libya’s affairs by offering support to terrorist and Islamist groups functioning in the Arab country.
