Berlin – Dr. Zai Farid, Director of the Egyptian Museum in Germany, stated that Egyptian Woman during Pharaoh civilization is historically proven to be the first woman ever in world’s history to get sovereign and political rights that modern-day women started taking for granted less than a century ago.
Farid also noted that during the times of Egyptian Pharaohs, women assumed power and led battles on behalf of their peoples and homeland such as Queen Hatshepsut and Queen Cleopatra. The former was the second historically confirmed female to rule as pharaoh regnant (the first being Sobekneferu). Various other women may have also ruled as Pharaohs or at least as regents before Hatshepsut.

Farid added that another notable example of woman who became pharaoh was Cleopatra VII, the last pharaoh of Ancient Egypt. Hatshepsut’s reign was much longer and more prosperous. She was successful in warfare early in her reign, but generally is considered to be a pharaoh who inaugurated a long peaceful era. Cleopatra VII re-established international trading relationships lost during a foreign occupation and brought great wealth to Egypt. That wealth enabled Hatshepsut to initiate building projects that raised the caliber of Ancient Egyptian architecture to a standard, comparable to classical architecture, which would not be rivaled by any other culture for a thousand years. She managed to rule for about 20 years. One of the most famous things that she did was build Hatshepsut’s temple.
Her remarks came at a symposium held by Mrs. Najla Al-Kawanjki, wife of Egypt’s ambassador in Berlin Mr. Badr Abdel Atti, on the ‘Role of Women in the Pharaoh Era and Modern Archeological Discoveries in Egypt’.
