Cairo – Like its kindred Islamist groups, Muslim Brotherhood has always been keen to smear the image of Egypt’s late President Gamal Abdel-Nasser, as they tend to blame him for establishing what they describe as anti-Islam state. The leaders of the group wrote books and produced documentary films to undermine the popularity of Nasser but all in vain.
Muslim Brotherhood’s well-oiled propaganda to defame late strongman failed to convince the vast majority of Egyptians of their mendacity; however, it managed somehow to achieve its end objectives abroad.
Islamist movement expert Ahmed Ban said that there had been a historical rivalry between Muslim Brotherhood and the late president that is still in effect till this moment of speaking. Ban added that the Brotherhood is always hell-bent on smearing his historical feat, namely the July 23 Revolution orchestrated by Nasser and his patriotic nationalist free officers. The revolution that ushered in a new era of social and political reforms, the Brotherhood deem it as “jinx” that came to undermine their role in Egyptian life and politics.
The Brotherhood turned to falsify the political realities and to promote that Abdel-Nasser was the enemy of Islam, Ban said.
Ban added that the group blamed Abdel-Nasser for undermining their self-styled Islamic revolution and pushing Egypt to embrace a more secular strain. He added that the Brotherhood accused the former president of favoring arts spectrum over their leaders, while persecuting preachers and people of faith at large.
He added, “The Brotherhood’s propaganda succeeded in smearing the image of Egypt’s former president abroad due to their false claim about death sentence meted out to their staunch ideologue Sayed Qutb.”
Likewise, Islamist Movement expert Jamal Al-Menshawy said that Muslim Brotherhood used their media platforms for decades just to defame Abdel-Nasser, as they focused on the dark side of their relationship with him. Al-Menshawy added that the Egyptian regime, under Nasser, adopted repressive approach against the Brotherhood who were subjected to great deal of unbearable torture in Nasser’s prisons, while Egypt were making strides in all walks of life without the group.
In the same context, former leader of Muslim Brotherhood Tariq Al-Bishbishi said that Muslim Brotherhood still falsify history related to the era of late President, saying that they have been applying the same approach against several other Egyptian iconic figures such as Al-Nahas, Al-Khazendar among many others.
Al-Bishbishi added that Abdel-Nasser dissolved their clandestine organization and consolidated the nascent Egyptian republic by dint of his popularity with the masses and notoriety with extremist groups. He stressed that extremist groups were implicated in two failed attempts on Nasser’s life. That’s why he cracked down very hard on them and pursued them wherever they were found.
