During a meeting held in Riyadh on Sunday in support of the current Yemeni-elected regime, Egyptian Foreign Affairs Minister Sameh Shoukry stated that Egypt will not allow the security of Saudi Arabia to be threatened, as it is a part of Egypt’s.
The meeting was attended by the foreign ministers and chiefs of staff of the countries constituting the coalition supporting Yemen’s regime.
Shoukry stressed that Egypt will not accept any attempt to ignore the political solution in Yemen or the use of ballistic missiles against targets within Yemen.
Egypt will participate with the coalition’s member states in support of legitimacy in Yemen and will call on the international community to shoulder its responsibility to stop these aggressive practises immediately, he added.
He stressed that the elements of the political solution in Yemen are well known and available. “We have a clear political reference, Security Council Resolution 2216, Gulf Initiative, and the outputs of the national dialogue,” he added.
“We have proposals presented by United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh to solve the crisis of Yemen,” Shoukry said.
“We are gathering today to emphasize the unity of the the countries of the Alliance for the Support of Legitimacy and our determination to continue our joint work to end the escalating crisis in Yemen,” he said.
Shoukry pointed out that Yemen suffers from political instablity, a security vacuum and a dramatic humanitarian crisis that may be the worst in its modern history.
He concluded that Egypt’s position is unified with that of other coalition members, who refuse any attempts of imposing power. He added that a political solution is necessary and that the international community must cooperate to achieve this.
