Anti-terror quartet, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, have listed two entities and 11 individuals on their banned lists as part of efforts to combat terrorism.
“The added entities are terror organizations working for promoting terrorism by spreading hate speech under the cloak of Islam to facilitate different terrorist activities,” read a statement from the quartet. “The individuals have perpetrated different acts of terror directly funded by Qatar at various levels, including using Qatari passports and working under the cover of Qatari charitable organisations to facilitate their activities.”
The statement added that the four countries believe that Qatari authorities have “not taken any practical measures” to stop terrorist activities, and continue to support, sponsor and finance terrorism, encourage extremism and spread hate speech.
The additions to the quartet’s terror list come just days after a bipartisan group of American lawmakers sent a letter Treasury Secretary in which they criticised his announcement last month that US and Qatari officials had signed a Memorandum of Understanding on combating terror financing.
“We are deeply concerned that your letter omitted any mention of Hamas, a heinous terrorist network,” the letter noted. “Doha has been a sanctuary to Hamas terrorist officials, including Hamas leader Khaled Mashal, and Qatari citizens have a well-established history of financing the group.”
