UN special rapporteur on human rights warned in a report issued today of the acute poverty in which millions of US people live, casting suspicion on the policy of the most democratic and freedom state in the world.
In the two-week fact-finding tour, which included California, Alabama, Georgia, West Virginia and Washington, the rapporteur Philip Alston, pours scorn on the US strategy which failed to distribute the country’s immense wealth and accomplish equality in society.
The shocking report, released by UN Human Rights council, shows an enormous disparity between the poor and the rich in the dreamland and one of the wealthiest countries.
“The American dream is rapidly becoming the American Illusion. The condition of millions of Americans is appalling, “Alston described.
Latest figures put the number of Americans living in poverty at 40 million – almost 13% of the population. Of those, almost half (20 million) are living in deep poverty.
Alston accuses the incumbent American president, Donald Trump, and his party of attempting of deliberately distorting the shape of American society in a bid to become the most unequal society in the world.
Bernie Sanders, the US senator, met the UN monitor on Friday and sounded his own alarm about the future of the country.
“The US should provide a model in how to treat all of its citizens with dignity. Sadly it is not the real case,” Sanders added
The UN rapporteur expressed his concern about the changes proposed by Trump administration on taxation and welfare programs, stressing that all these suggestions will have catastrophic consequences for the poor.
He also shed light on the inefficient system of social protection, on which much people rely; referring it will increase the number of the destitute.
