Egyptian weightlifter Sara Samir clinched the gold medal in the International World Federation (IWF) championships in Anaheim, California on Sunday.
The 2016 Olympic bronze medalist lifted 136kg in the clean and jerk, failing in the three snatch attempts. Samir is the first female in the country’s history to win an Olympic medal after winning bronze at the Rio de Janeiro Games.
This comes few hours after Egypt’s Mohamed Ihab made history by winning three gold medals at the World Championship, becoming the first African World Champion in a men’s event since 1984.
The country’s last gold medal at the World Championship was back in 1951, when the legendary Said Gouda and Ibrahim Shams triumphed in Milan in the 60kg and the 67.5kg contests respectively.
