Abuzed Omar Dorda was born on April 4th, 1944, in al-Ruhaibat, a town near Libya’s western mountain, around 184kilometers south of capital, Tripoli.
Dorda was the minister of media and culture between 1974 and 1976. He became an undersecretary of the Foreign Affairs Ministry in 1990, before he was appointed the prime minister of Libya in 1997. He then became Libya’s permanent representative at the United Nations.
On April 12th, 2009, Dorda became Libya’s intelligence chief, replacing Moussa Koussa.
On September 11th, 2011, Dorda was detained by Transitional National Council forces. The Muslim Brotherhood (MB) put its weight behind his trial on June 26th, 2012.
However, his lawyer requested an adjournment of the trial until he prepared the necessary defense documents.
The trial was initially adjourned until July 10th, 2012, and then until August 28th, 2012. On October 24th, 2013, Dorda was officially accused by the MB-formed Tripoli Court of committing “serious” crimes during the 2011 uprising in Libya.
On July 28th, 2015, Dorda was convicted and then sentenced to death, together with eight other people, out of a total of 32 defendants in the case.
However, the ruling has not been executed until now.
