Police succeed to foil an attempt to bomb a church

Ten people were killed and four others were injured in a gun attack on a church in Helawn on Friday, Ministry of Interior said, adding that all the injured were ferried to the nearby hospitals.

According to the statement issued by the ministry, a terrorist riding a motorbike attempted to penetrate the security cordon outside the Marmina church to throw a bomb in the vicinity of the targeted place.

The statement added that the gunman rode past the church on a motorbike where he opened fire on security services responsible for protecting the church. The security forces dealt rapidly with the situation and succeeded to bar him from entering the church where it resulted in killing a police serviceman and injuring another one.

The assailant, a dangerous terrorist element who carried out a number of previous terror attacks, was arrested, as per the statement.

Police seized a bomb ready to use, machine gun, and 150 bullets were in his possession.

It also said there was a separate attack on a shop, carried out by the same assailant, in the same neighbourhood of Helwan that claimed the life of two civilians.

on the other hand, A team of investigators from the Supreme State Security Prosecution, assigned by Prosecutor-General Nabil Sadeq, moved to the scene of the terrorist attack to examine the site and question witnesses.

Another team of prosecutors arrived at hospitals to question the people who were wounded in the attack.
