Vandals broke the statue of Argentine star Lionel Messi and cut his legs in Argentina.
Police said they had no information about the identity of the perpetrators.
The statue is located near the banks of La Plata River in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires.
It is flanked by sculptures of other Argentine sporting greats such as Formula 1 world champion Juan Manuel Fangio and 1986 World Cup winner Diego Maradona.
