The National Election Authority (NEA) refuted on Thursday allegations by rights lawyer Khaled Ali as regards the timetable of presidential elections, due later in March.
In a statement, the authority said the timetable of presidential elections complies with Constitution provisions and was set in light of previously-announced legal and constitutional dates.
Ali, a former candidate in the 2012 presidential elections, argued that the nine-day timetable set for gathering the endorsements required for nomination was not enough.
The dates of presidential elections were set in the 2014 Constitution that was approved by the Egyptian people in a referendum, the authority said.
While setting dates for different stages of electoral process, the authority was keen to guarantee equal chances to all presidential hopefuls.
Ali announced on Wednesday that he no longer intends to run in the upcoming presidential elections due to what he described as “absence of any possibilities for competition”. (MORE)
