The Saint Elias Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Abu Dhabi, in the al-Musaffah neighborhood, has been inaugurated by Patriarch John X of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All The East, accompanied by UAE’S Minister of Tolerance Sheikh Nahyan bin Mbarak Al Nahyan and a number of Abu Dhabi notables. This was to be followed by the mass and with prayers of consecration and dedication.
Having unveiled the memorial plaque recording this event, His Eminence walked, hand in hand with the minister, into the Cathedral to cut the ceremonial ribbon amid happy ululations and recitation of hymns, surrounding a gathering of religious, political and diplomatic dignitaries along with leading socialites and members of the media.
The first to give a speech was His Grace Bishop of Emirates Gregorios Khoury Abdullah, expressing gratitude for everything the State has done for the Antiochian Vicarite in UAE, thanking President of the United Arab Emirates, His Excellency Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed, for donating the plot of land on which the church has been constructed, asserting that the strong belief in the integral onenss of all humans cannot be shaken by diversity of religious doctrines. He said that this diversity provides societies with the power to develop and to be distinguished.
Meanwhile, Minister of Tolerance, Sheikh Nahyan bin Mbarak Al Nahyan stressed the special and enduring relations between the Patriarchate of Antioch and UAE, based upon sublime ideals and shared principles, working for public good, and for the spread of love and peace.
The concluding speech was given by Patriarch John X. According to the Patriarchate of Antioch website, John X said ” In the most beloved Emirates, our hearts have been filled with love for the soil of this land. And the beloved Emirates we are setting up, to-day the church of Saint Elias, declaring that God Almighty id pleased to see his creatures, regardless of their different faiths are united by love.”
His Eminence offered souvenirs to the Minister of Tolerance and to Engineer Albert Matta, who was also awarded the medal of the two saints Peter and Paul, with the rank of Commodore. This was followed by all present being allowed to move into the main hall of the cathedral to give their regards and to congratulate His Holiness for the inauguration of the cathedral.
Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All The East is an Oriental Orthodox church founded in Antioch, according to the church tradition, by Peter and Paul, with Patriarchal diocese in Damascus, and a congregation of 12 million people, living in Syria, Iraq, U.S., in different European countries and in Australia. Arabic and Greek are the languages of liturgy in the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All The East, which id a member of the Middle East Council of Churches.
