Transport minister confers with US RailRunner on rail freight transfer

Minister of Transport Hisham Arafat conferred on Wednesday with a delegation of Rail Runner NA Incorporation on cooperation in rail freight transfer.

During the meeting, the minister asserted that the state is attaching great importance to enhancement of goods transfer by trains and railroads to alleviate burdens on the bridges and roads and reduce fuel consumption, a matter which has positive impact from both the environmental and economic perspectives.

He also reviewed the ministry’s efforts which targets the transfer of at least 25 million tons of commodities annually by the end of 2022.

RailRunner delegation reviewed the state-of-the-art technology used by the company to provide a multi-purpose model combining the privileges of both rail and land commodity transfer.

The company’s delegation voiced readiness to transfer expertise and technology to the Egyptian Railway Authority to ease traffic jams, decrease the use of land roads by commodity trucks and reduce the time of commodity transfer from harbors or logistic centers to the markets.

The two sides agreed on starting the use of such technology during the current year. (MENA)
