President Abdel Fattah El Sisi called for the formation of a high committee of university professors and experts to scrutinize the country’s railway network file following Wednesday’s deadly train crash in the northern province of Beheira.
This committee will have to inspect and follow up the railways service, he said at the groundbreaking ceremony of the first phase of the coastal El Alamein eco-city project on Thursday.
To build a modern railway network and enforce safety measures, Egypt needs around 200 to 250 billion pounds, he said.
“We must face the fact that this huge sum of money is not available, he said.
Concerning yesterday’s collision, he said “we need a higher team of experts made up of professors from various universities and the Military Technical College and officials from the Ministry of Transport to fully check the railway network and carriages.”
“We also must be ready to admit that we will stop traffic on a certain network temporarily until it is upgraded,” he added.
Yesterday, two passenger carriages separated from one train and collided with a cargo train. Around 12 people were killed and 40 injured.
The president called for a full investigation into the accident to determine the causes behind it.
It was not a human error because the system is mechanized and enforces the safety measures for railways, he said.
“We need the committee to tell us the truth and the prime minister to announce to the public how this accident happened,” he said.
Turning to the new Alamein city, the president said Egypt is very capable of building exemplary cities and tourist resorts that will compete with the world’s top tourist resorts.
“When we decided to plan the new cities or the fourth-generation cities’ project, we thought about establishing new cities that will absorb the highest number of inhabitants and provide a better life for them,” he said.
If Egypt’s population continues to grow in such a haphazard way, “we will turn into one big bloc of shanty towns that will be impossible to deal with over the next 100 years. Therefore it was imperative that we build the new cities,” he added.
