Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Abul Gheit welcomed on Thursday a ceasefire deal signed by the government of South Sudan and the opposition at the conclusion of talks hosted by Khartoum a day earlier.
“We hope that the deal will lead to a full and permanent ceasefire in South Sudan to open the door for the complete implementation of all provisions stated in the previous agreements,” he said in a statement.
Abul Gheit commended Sudan’s efforts under the leadership of President Omar al Bashir in sponsoring the agreement and the efforts of IGAD and the African Union aimed at reaching a political settlement to the crisis in South Sudan.
He also hailed the regional efforts that contributed to national reconciliation and the unification of the Southern Sudanese people.
