Yemeni government forces, backed by an Arab coalition, have reached the southern and northern parts of Hodeidah’s International Airport, following violent clashes with Houthi militants in the city.
The army is besieging the airport in preparation for raiding it and clearing the area of landmines planted by the Houthis.
“The army is closing in on Houthi militants at the airport and it almost has entire control of the surrounding areas,” Saba News Agency reported.
More than 500 Houthi militants were killed in six days of fighting in Hodeidah, the Saudi Press Agency quoted the Yemeni Ministry of Defense as announcing.
Dozens of Houthi militants had also been captured since the operation to retake the port city began on Wednesday, it said.
Meanwhile, military sources said the battle to recapture Hodeidah International Airport has entered its last stage after Yemeni forces pushed deep towards the western gate and isolated Houthi militants in the area around the airport.
