Ismailia Criminal Court sentenced on Thursday 13 defendants, including seven in absentia, to death over charges of breaking out from al-Mustaqbal prison in Ismailia in October of 2016.
The defendants were also charged with killing an officer, attempting to kill three other policemen and using force to terrify public servants during the escape.
The death penalty papers were referred to the Mufti of Egypt as per the Egyptian law to examine them but his opinion remains unbinding.
