Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen ordered on Wednesday forming a 10-member ministerial committee to look into human rights violations against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.
Addressing a meeting of the OIC Contact Group on Rohingya Muslims in New York, Othaimeen thanked Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Indonesia, Jordan and Malaysia for their financial and humanitarian contributions to the Rohingya refugees.
The atrocities committed by the Myanmar army against the Rohingya Muslims in August last year had forced more than 700,000 men, women and children to flee to Bangladesh, he explained.
Such brutal acts represent a gross and flagrant violation of international law and international human rights conventions, he added.
Othaimeen called on Myanmar’s government to take urgent measures to allow Rohingya refugees, as well as internally and externally displaced persons to return to their homes.
