Britain has issued a warning that the extremists and militants are regrouping and organizing their cells in Afghanistan and are preparing for attacks that could target various parts of the Europe, including the United Kingdom.
The warning came from UK Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson who said that his country and other European states are being threatened by extremists from Afghanistan-based branches of Daesh.
“What we see is a real threat posed by these groups to the UK and we’ve got to be acting as we are to ensure that we do not see future Manchester-style attacks,” Williamson said.
“We consistently see terrorist groups operating here in Afghanistan, (and) evidence of their links back not just to the United Kingdom but to the whole of continental Europe,” he added.
A European Commission report issued last week mentioned that the terrorist attacks on Europe in 2017, have a 44% increase over the previous year, but the report expected al-Qaeda to attract elements of the Daesh, which has become less attractive.
Britain has sent 440 more troops to Afghanistan amid fears jihadis there are plotting a new Manchester-style terror attack.
Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said he was “consistently” receiving intelligence Afghanistan terrorist groups have links to the UK.
Mr Williamson’s comments came as an extra 440 British troops arrived in the country to help stabilise the country, following a request from the US. It brings the total number of British personnel in the country to 1,100, the third largest behind the United States and Germany.
CNN reported previously that the ISIS leader and 10 other fighters from the terrorist group were killed in an airstrike, according to provincial spokesman Attaullah Khogyani.
Khogyani told CNN previously that Afghan and coalition forces carried out the strike after receiving intelligence from Afghanistan’s National Directorate of Security.
“America and her allies are in Afghanistan to maintain pressure on the networked, trans-regional terrorists attempting to plot, resource and direct attacks from here,” Army Gen. Scott Miller, commander of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan, said in a statement Sunday. “This is only part of the coalition’s work towards an Afghan security solution, but it is a vital part.”
