In a surprising development, the Giant Brigades, which back the legitimacy in Yemen, sent troops to Al-Barah and Al-Kadaha in Waziyia, in the west of the Muslim Brotherhood-dominated Taiz Governorate, to support the Yemeni joint forces and ward off attacks launched by Houthis.
The move is also aimed at confronting Al-Islah Party, the Brotherhood’s political arm in Yemen.
The Giant Brigades sent the reinforcements in a bid to secure the freed territories from the Iran-backed Houthis. The reinforcements are part of preparations for a decisive battle in the west of Taiz to free the governorate from Houthis, according to the press office of the Giant Brigades.
Why Waziyia?
Nazar Haitham, a top official of the Southern Transitional Council, said that Waziyia is a strategic area in Taiz, located between Aden and Hodeidah.
“Securing Waziyia is essential to maintain supply lines to the Yemeni resistance and Arab coalition forces in the outskirts of Hodeidah and Aden,” he said.
“Another reason is to be in guard of any treachery by Al-Islah Party, the Brotherhood’s arm in Yemen as the Brotherhood is seeking to turn Taiz into a Brotherhood state. There’s a Qatari-brokered compromise between Houthis and Al-Islah Party,” Haitham told THE REFERENCE.
He added that the Giant Brigades and the Yemeni joint forces are fully aware of the Brotherhood’s plans for Taiz and Yemen as the group recruits elements from al-Qaeda and ISIS under the leadership of Adnan Rozaiq.
“Al-Islah Party has connections in the Yemeni army and tighten activities of Taiz Governor Amin Ahmed Mahmoud,” Haitham said, stressing the need to protect Waziyia from any counterattacks.
