Saudi border guards succeeded in repelling an attack by Iranian-backed Houthi militia elements in Yemen on the southern border of the province of Saada (northern Yemen), the stronghold of the Huthi militias.
Saudi Arabian military sources said on Friday that the Arab Coalition forces to support the legitimacy in Yemen failed to thwart attempts to penetrate the border by the division affiliated to the Houthi militia, called the “Death Battalion”, which includes elite fighters of the coup.
Saudi forces destroyed a number of members of the Death Battalion when they tried to infiltrate across the border. They were bombarded with artillery and mortars. They were attacked by Saudi army Apache planes, killing 20 militia members.
Militants were surprised that they were caught in an ambiguous military ambush of Saudi forces with the participation of ground forces and marines inside Yemeni territory before they reached the border line near the Jazan region inside the kingdom.
Iranian instructions
For his part, the researcher specializing in Iranian affairs, Hisham al-Baqali, said that Houthi’s attempts to break into the Saudi border reflects the desire of the militias to transfer part of the battle inside Saudi territory in any way so there is a direct threat to the Saudi state or at the very least fueling a crisis within the Kingdom to influence the economy.
He said in statements to the Reference that the latest incursion is one of the reasons for the establishment of the Houthi organization in Yemen. He added that the main goal of the existence of militia coup by Tehran is to use it as a pressure card against Saudi Arabia and penetrate its territory from the south to create a Shiite separatist region south of the kingdom in the long term.
Not the first
This attempt to break through the Saudi-Saudi border is not the first, as these attempts began in 2009, in the sixth war that broke out between the Huthis and the Yemeni army, and resumed again after the launching of the storming operation which was launched by the Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia on March 25, 2015.
Houthis threatened to target Saudi Arabia as a retaliation, but all attempts failed because of the vigilance of Saudi border guards.
