The United States had to impose an economic embargo on Taliban to pressure the movement into a political settlement with the Afghan government after 17 years of conflict.
The US released a number of detainees, including Abdul Ghani Baradar, to woo Taliban.
Taliban said in a statement that it had no economic ties with the US, asserting that the whole sanctions are futile.
Abdel Khabir Atallah, professor of political science at Egypt’s Assiut University, has said the US will drop its last card to pressure Taliban into a political settlement with the Afghan government. But it will fail, according to Atallah.
“The Taliban leaders had no economic relations or interests with the US. Therefore, ending the embargo won’t do any good,” Atallah told THE REFERENCE.
According to the political science professor, Taliban is divided into two groups: one approves of talks with the government and the US, and another that rejects such talks.
“The group which rejects peace talks benefits from the ongoing war in Afghanistan. They simply want to make it an Islamic state and a hub for the caliphate as they claim,” he added.
