Labor Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said “ISIS bride” Shamima Begum should be granted legal aid so that the east London teenager can challenge a decision made by home secretary, Sajid Javid, to remove her UK citizenship.
“She is a British national and therefore she has that right, like any of us do, to apply for legal aid if she has a problem. She has legal rights, just like anybody else does,” Corbyn said.
Javid has faced criticism after the baby son of Shamima Begum died in a Syrian camp last month.
Ms Begum left the UK in 2015 with two friends and was found in a Syrian refugee camp in mid-February. She wanted to return to Britain but was stripped of her citizenship.
Tasnime Akunjee, the Begum family’s lawyer, told the Guardian that Begum, now 19, should be allowed to appeal against the decision of the home secretary, Sajid Javid, to deprive her of her citizenship.
Ms Begum told the media she did not regret travelling to Syria. However, she has changed the tone lately stressing that she wants to return to Britain.
