The local administration in northeast Syria has dismissed media reports about sending back Iraqi citizens linked to the Islamic State, aka Daesh.
Kamal Akef, a spokesman for the Autonomous Administration’s foreign relations department, said some 30,000 Iraqi refugees, who are not linked to Daesh, would be transferred.
“These are false and unreliable news. There was a meeting between an Iraqi official delegation and the Autonomous Administration’s foreign relations department. The discussion focused on the situation of Iraqi civilian refugees totaling around 30,000 in areas under Autonomous Administration’s control. It has nothing to do with Daesh,” Akef said.
Akef said that some 4,000 Iraqi citizens, including women and children, had registered their names to return to Iraq voluntarily.
