The Al-Azhar Observatory to Combat Extremism issued a new study on the rise of the extreme right in recent years in Western countries. The first focus was on immigrants, especially Muslims. The followers of this extremist ideology called for the expulsion of immigrants and the closing of new immigration waves. The path of violence is a way towards achieving their goals, and since they have not found fruitful results, they have taken advantage of democratic tools to gain power and thus implement their objectives through legal institutions and laws.
The study showed that this policy has come to fruition; some of these parties came to power, as in Italy and Austria, and counterparts in other countries are still moving in this area. They sometimes progress and retreat at other times, and we will try in this article to present the foundations on which these ideologies have been adopted by these right-wing parties and groups in the West.
The book “The Ideology of the Far Right” examined several extreme right-wing parties in Germany, Finland and the Netherlands and concluded on the ideological basis of extreme right-wing thought, which he enumerated in several principles which in turn represent successive stages. First, the principle of nationalism or racial affiliation . He pointed out that the followers of this ideology seek to achieve consistency in their country at the level of the state, which is called the “political unity”, as well as at the level of the nation, which is called the “cultural unity”.
According to the book, this belief led to the second principle of the superiority of white race, intolerance and hostility to all that is foreign, which ultimately resulted in the third principle of the chauvinistic view of well-being, which means the state and its social policies.
The fourth principle is their firm belief in law and order. They believe that the state should adopt a strict legal system and implement it with all force and firmness.
Targeting Muslims
Al-Azhar Observatory explained that the prevalence of these ideologies and ideas and the adoption by some of the largest media and senior politicians in the world led to some of the citizens of these countries being affected by this speech so much to the extent that some of them committed crimes of hatred against Muslims. The most recent of these attacks was the massacre of the Christchurch mosques in New Zealand, where an extremist fanatic killed 51 worshipers in Dar Abada and broadcast it directly to a social networking site.
He showed no remorse or shower any regret when appearing being brought to trial shortly after his arrest, but showed his insistence on his ideas by referring to the Nazi sign during his trial.
The study also showed that as a result of the deep faith of these parties and groups in the ideology of nationalism, they also oppose the project of European unity because they do not want to dissolve the nationalities in one other, which resulted in the establishment of movements and parties in different countries calling for the consolidation of this matter.
“It may be thought that the first wave began recent, but it started very early after the Second World War. It was an extension of Nazi ideology and fascism, and it was followed by some political parties in Italy and Germany between 1946 and 1949.”
“This extremist ideology has its roots in the past, the roots that gradually grew, and then reinforced by some international transformations and important events, such as the 9/11 attacks, and some bombings by some people who say that they are Islamists.”
The study concluded that perhaps the biggest factor in fueling this thought and spreading it is the clear bias of the media coverage against Muslims, which highlights all that is negative in what is attributed to them, while turning a blind eye to the crimes of the extreme right.
