Attacks on Saudi oil giant Aramco and associated tensions in the Middle East have changed the world view of the Iranian nuclear deal. France said at the UN meetings on Monday that the rules of the game had changed, while Britain called for the conclusion of a new agreement with Tehran with the US side to be present in this agreement as well.
French President Emmanuel Macron said attacks on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia had changed the rules of the game but showed the need for continued French mediation efforts.
France is playing a role of mediation between America and Iran, since US President Donald Trump announced his withdrawal from the agreement concluded by his predecessor Barack Obama’s government with Tehran.
In May, US President Donald Trump announced his country’s withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Tehran. Washington imposed sanctions on individuals and entities it accused of financing Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, reflecting the White House’s view of Iran’s regime.
With tensions rising between Washington and Tehran after the escalation of US sanctions, Iran faces charges of involvement in the attack on Saudi Aramco, which contributes a large proportion of global oil production.
The United States is demanding an international response to Iran; where US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that his country is seeking international support in the face of Iran, adding, “We hope that the United Nations to adopt a firm response against Iran.”
New nuclear agreement
Since the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal, European countries have been trying to find a formula that would preserve their relations with Iran, without losing Trump.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said it was time for a new deal with Iran, which US President Donald Trump agreed, saying the deal with Iran was too bad and a new deal must be signed, noting that Iran is the world’s largest financier of terrorism.
Dr. Mohammed Al-Qawas, a political researcher, said that the proposal of a new nuclear agreement with Iran is not related to the response to the oil file and the attack on Aramco.
He added: “Another agreement with Iran has nothing to do with its attack on the Saudi company, as the US administration has preceded and put forward 12 conditions that are far from the energy file, and here we can say that the US and European treatment of the crisis is not clear this time.”
