The European Union on Wednesday (September 25th) appointed Major General Antonio Blaise Palau as commander of the EU operation on the Somali coast, with the aim of strengthening efforts to combat piracy and secure shipping off the Somali coast, the Horn of Africa and the West Indian Ocean.
Major General Antonio Blaise, on October 1, is the commander-in-chief of the Spanish Marine Corps, and has been working for more than 41 years.
The European naval operation, called Atlanta, contributes to deterrence, prevention and suppression of piracy and armed robbery off the Somali coast, which is exploited by al-Shabaab as an important source.
The operation also aims to eliminate the risks posed by piracy, which threaten the safety of regional and global maritime navigation, as well as WFP ships.
The EU’s comprehensive approach to Somalia includes complementary missions within the framework of the Common Security and Defense Policy of the Union, through several operations: Operation NAVOR, Operation Atalanta, EUCAP Somalia, providing political and strategic military advice to the Somali authorities, and contributing to the development of training capabilities of the Somali National Army.
Al-Shabaab exploits the deteriorating security situation and seeks to tighten control over the Somali coast north, taking advantage of the security turmoil and pirate operations that have re-emerged in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea coast, but the naval and European forces have been able to repel a number of armed attacks by the movement.
Al-Shabaab’s piracy operations on ships crossing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait on the African coast, bordered by the Indian Ocean in the south, and the Red Sea in the north, which is an important shipping lane in world trade, are among the most important sources of funding used by the movement to finance its terrorist operations against forces.
Nasser Mamoun Issa, an African researcher, said the Red Sea coast and the Gulf of Aden are areas of paramount importance to al-Shabaab, noting that the pro-al-Qaeda movement relies heavily on them to buy weapons through which they can carry out operations against the Somali government forces.
Nasser, in a statement to the Reference, said that the operations of the pirates are used by the movement in financing, where the hostages are kidnapped and then freed after payment of ransom from the owners of those ships, pointing out that the northern region is one of the most used by the movement for pirate operations.
