A female terrorist who was killed during a recent crackdown by French police earlier this month turned out to be working for a well-known Qatari charity, a French news portal has revealed.
Hanan Abul Hana, who was killed together with her husband, Michael Chiolo, during a police crackdown, turned out to have worked for a Qatari charity accused of financing terrorism, the news site Valeurs Actuelles added.
Abul Hana was wounded during a raid by police on the families’ ward at the prison where she and her husband were staying, but then succumbed to her wounds. The raid came hard on the heels of an attack on a Paris police station.
The French site said Abul Hana had exchanged emails with some Qatari figures who praised her work.
Abul Hana collaborated with her husband in carrying out the attack inside the police station by handing him the knife he used in the attack. He used the same knife in stabbing two guards.
French police had to open their gunfire when they raided the families’ ward at the prison to arrest Abul Hana’s husband. The woman and her husband hid inside the prison for ten hours.
Investigations by French police have shown that Abul Hana had smuggled knives into the prison and then hid them into her personal belongings during visits to her husband. The knives were not discovered by metal detectors inside the prison.
Abul Hana’s husband was sentenced to 30 years in prison for armed robbery and terrorism.
Preliminary press reports described Abul Hana as a “silly” woman who was used by radical activists.
Nonetheless, investigations have shown that Abul Hana, 34, was radicalized years ago.
The same investigations have shown that the woman had worn the full-face veil after getting married.
Investigations by French police also showed that Abul Hana and her husband lived near al-Nour Mosque, one of the largest in France and Europe.
The mosque was placed under special supervision by French intelligence. Abul Hana also worked as the assistant executive head of the Passerelles Fund, which raised money for the mosque.
Chiolo, who converted to Islam in 2010, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for kidnapping, murder and torture in 2014. A year later, Chiolo was convicted for justifying terrorism in the wake of the ISIS terrorist attacks in Paris that killed 130 people.
