Erdogan supports terrorism in Libya with arms deal

The tripartite statement by the foreign ministers of Egypt, Greece and Cyprus, which ended the legal form of the agreement between the government led by Fayez al-Sarraj and the government of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, highlighted the suspicious Turkish role in Libya, by accelerating Ankara’s support for armed militias in Tripoli and terrorist groups with new arms shipments.

The commander of the artillery weapon in the so-called «volcano of anger» of the government of reconciliation, Colonel Faraj Mustafa Khalil, said in a post on his Facebook page, “Soon joyous news about the front, we will have the initiative again with the arrival of qualitative support and wait for the rest of the trained staff abroad.”

He continued by saying, “We will also see the return of warplanes and march of our forces with the intensity and strength of Libyan national crews.”

The commander of the Artillery Corps attributed the concord to the defeats suffered by the elements in the axes of fighting, but the army forces of the General Command were equipped and have trained crews and modern operating rooms.

Al-Wefaq forces have been suffering for weeks from the collapse of their military and logistical capabilities. The LNA announced, on the most appropriate occasion, that its forces shot down Turkish drones and destroyed rooms and sites used to equip and store this type of aircraft, especially at Mitiga and Misrata airports, and bombed a number of weapons stores.

Since April 2019, Turkey has announced “clearly and explicitly, that Turkish President Erdogan is providing his support to the government of national reconciliation in Tripoli, including military support that may change the balance of power on the ground,” according to a report published by Deutsche Welle on 30 April 2019.

The report itself added that this public support is not surprising; because it came after the previous hidden support which is the product of the extension of major conflicts between regional and international powers.

It transferred political, economic and strategic differences to a new land, after the Syrian territory was the scene of those conflicts. This clearly indicates that regional support is behind this support, not the pursuit of Libya’s stability.

The new Turkish move to support the militias in Tripoli is armed as part of a Turkish strategy to keep the militias’ hands on terror in the capital Tripoli, as the Libyan army advances in the fighting.

It also comes after the signing of two memorandums of understanding with Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj on the areas of security cooperation and maritime areas, and the declaration of Egypt, Cyprus and Greece that they are against this suspicious tunnels.
