After the economic situation in Iran deteriorated, in light of the continued popular protests, the suggestion of early elections on the surface was kinder, especially after the government failed to devise solutions to address the deteriorating economy, as a result of the US sanctions.
The Iranian reformist journalist, Abbas Abdi, announced in an interview with the Iranian Sada magazine on December 14 that his proposal for the president’s resignation and early elections is not only his proposal, but some ministers are also thinking about this.
The slave of Abdi’s proposal received great reactions in the governmental press, such as “Kayhan”, “Jam Jam”, “Watan Amroz”, and other fundamentalist newspapers, as these newspapers saw that those who are demanding the resignation of the president and early elections are extremists.
Government response
And on the Iranian government’s directives to address these proposals, member of the Building Cadres party, Atria Nefer, announced that the proposal for the resignation or interrogation of the Iranian president aims to strike the political stability of the country, while the reformist deputy, Abdullah Nasseri, said that the reformists do not wish to resign.
And if it is true what Abdi stated that there are ministers who support the proposal to hold early Iranian elections, then this indicates that the mullahs’ regime is facing a great danger and uses all its tools to confront such proposals by making statements that exaggerate the negative impact of holding early elections on the Iranian interior.
Reasons for calling for resignation
Firas Elias, a researcher on Iranian politics, explains the persistent perception of US sanctions and the failure of the US government.
Elias said in a statement to the Reference that Rouhani is not expected to respond to these calls, especially since today there is a clear consensus between the institutions of the presidency and the guide on many issues and policies, and therefore it is nothing more than attempts to review the media no more.
He added that regarding the possibility of going towards early elections, it can be said that the matter has some difficulty, since the internal and external challenges that the country is going through today do not allow new political tremors that may confuse the political situation more, as there is a general political consensus from most political currents.
