Greece is on high alert as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he would open the borders for Syrian refugees. A spokesman for the Greek government said that his country’s border guard forces did not shoot anyone attempting to illegally infiltrate into Greece.
Earlier, Erdogan alleged that Greek border guards had killed two migrants and wounded a third. Greece has taken tough measures to prevent illegal migrant inflows after thousands of people are swarming at its borders.
Recent remarks made by Erdogan that Turkey would open its borders for refugees into Europe have triggered the European Union’s concerns.
Erdogan criticized what he claimed to be the EU’s failure to share the burden of refugees with Ankara. In 2016, Turkey and the EU signed an agreement that obligated Ankara to keep the refugees within its territories for 6 billion euros. However, Erdogan has used the refugees to blackmail the European countries a number of times.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrel said in a statement that fighting in Idlib poses a threat to international security and would have serious humanitarian impacts on the region.
Refugees are paying the price ploys carried out by the Turkish dictator, who is using the refugees to pressure Europe to get support in his war in Syria.
