There is uncertainty over the future of Iran’s strongman in Iraq, Hadi al-Amiri, who is the head of Fatah Alliance, especially after he resigned from the Iraqi parliament.
Meanwhile, some people expect al-Amiri to be appointed as the commander of the paramilitary group, Popular Mobilization Force.
Commander
Security expert Hesham al-Hashimi said al-Amiri’s resignation was a prelude for his promotion to an executive position.
There are unconfirmed leaks that he would be the commander of the Popular Mobilization Forces, al-Hashimi wrote on Twitter about al-Amiri.
He revealed that the appointment was suggested by the new commander of Quds Brigade during his latest visit to Iraq.
Nevertheless, the Popular Mobilization Forces refuted rumors about al-Amiri’s appointment as a new commander.
It said in a statement that news about the appointment of al-Amiri as the commander of the forces was baseless.
Cutting Iran’s men down to size
Some observers believe that al-Amiri’s resignation gives insight into plans by new Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi to curb Iran’s influence in Iraq.
Iraqi opposition figures accuse the Shiite group, Badr Organization, of carrying out violations against Iraqi civilians inside secret jails since 2003.
They add that Iran might resort to pulling al-Amiri out of Iraq to protect him for fear of possible assassination by the United States.
Al-Amiri nurtured strong relations strong relations with Tehran and the Revolutionary Guard Corpse, especially during the time he spent in exile.
