In this new episode of our series on the methods Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erogan uses to silence the opposition and his political rivals, we will focus on how Erdogan is using assassinations to get rid of these opponents.
Those following politics in Turkey since the coming to power by the Justice and Development in 2003 can easily notice that different opinions have no place in this country under this party.
Erogan is using the 2016 failed coup in silencing the opposition and whoever does not uphold his worldview. The Turkish president is using every method possible to give his rivals and opponents a hard time, including those living outside Turkey.
Erdogan’s repressive policies brought him under accusation, especially when Ekrem İmamoğlu, the current mayor of Istanbul, underwent an attempt on his life.
İmamoğlu is proving a strong rival to the Turkish president, given the fact that the mayor of Istanbul always makes a successful bid in the Turkish presidential elections. Istanbul is also a stronghold of the Justice and Development Party since its coming to power.
The assassination attempt followed the founding of new political parties by some opposition figures and those who defected from the ruling party, including Ali Babacan, the former minister of the economy.
A 27-year-old man tried to enter İmamoğlu’s office from one of the windows. He was, however, arrested by guards. He had a razorblade in his hand when he was arrested. Upon investigation, the man conceded that he attended with the aim of killing the mayor.
Meanwhile, Austrian authorities foiled an attempt by the Turkish intelligence to assassinate an Austrian lawmaker.
The lawmaker’s would-be killer assassin said he was pushed by the Turkish intelligence to assassinate her. The lawmaker is an Austrian national with Kurdish origins.
