Euronews denies reports it will end Turkish language service

Pan-European broadcaster Euronews denied on Thursday reports it was set to axe its Turkish-language output.

Earlier in the day, Turkey’s state-run Anadolu agency said Euronews was planning to end its Turkish and Italian broadcasts, dismissing 30 journalists.

But a Euronews spokesperson dismissed the claim.

“To this day, we have not made any public announcement indicating that our Turkish edition will cease to exist,” spokesperson told Duvar.

Anadolu had failed to confirm the accuracy of the report before publishing, the spokesperson said.

Turkish is one of Euronews’ most read digital editions, he added.

On Tuesday, Euronews journalists took strike action to protest proposed cutbacks across the company.

The network began broadcasting in 1993, aiming to cover international news from a pan-European perspective. Located in France, it currently broadcasts in 12 languages. The Turkish edition was launched in 2010.
