The head of the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, which heads to the polls this weekend, has backed a new national coalition between his Greens party and Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) at the next elections.
Speaking to broadcaster ZDF, state premier Winfried Kretschmann argued that it could be an advantage to have two parties from different sides of the political spectrum come together to battle common problems such as the coronavirus crisis or climate change.
“The fight against climate change is not going to be a walk in the park,” he said.
The Greens are on course for another victory in Baden-Wuerttemberg, but they have also been polling strongly nationwide, second only to – but significantly behind – the conservative CDU/CSU grouping.
Kretschmann leads a coalition between the Greens and the CDU in Baden-Wuerttemberg, which along with the neighbouring south-western state of Rhineland Palatinate is going to the polls on Sunday.
The regional votes are being closely watched as indications for what may happen on September 26, when Germany holds national elections. These in turn will decide who succeeds Merkel as chancellor.
