The United States said it would pull its troops out of Iraq, in the light of an agreement with the Iraqi government in this regard.
It said it would focus in the coming period on the training of Iraqi security personnel and offering consultations to the Iraqi security establishment to ensure that the Islamic State group would not threaten Iraq’s security once more.
Troop pullout
The third round of the Iraqi-American strategic dialogue started online between Iraqi Foreign Minister, Fuad Hassan, and American Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken.
They addressed the issue of redeploying any remaining US combat forces in Iraq, as Washington agreed to withdraw its remaining forces.
The two ministers said in a statement following their meeting that American troops are in Iraq at the invitation of the Iraqi government to support the Iraqi security forces in their fight against IS, based on the increased capacity of the internal security forces.
The statement continued, “The transition of US and other international forces from combat operations to training, equipping, and assisting the internal security forces reflects the success of their strategic partnership, and guarantees support for the ongoing efforts of the Internal Security Forces, to ensure that ISIS does not once again threaten the stability of Iraq.”
