Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Sedat Onal arrived in Cairo early on Wednesday at the head of a delegation aimed at mending relations with Egypt.
This is the first time since June 30, 2013 that an official Turkish delegation visits Egypt. Relations between them deteriorated in wake of the ouster of Mohammed Morsi, of the Muslim Brotherhood, as Egyptian president in 2013.
The delegation is expected to hold several meetings with senior officials over the next two days.
The visit aims at tackling Egyptian-Turkish relations and ways to mend them. Officials will also address arrangements to hold a ministerial meeting between their countries.
An Egyptian Foreign Ministry statement had previously said that Onal’s meetings will focus on efforts that will help normalize relations on the bilateral and regional levels.
