A decision to close the National Cement Company was taken by its board and general assembly not the environment ministry, said Minister of Environment Khaled Fahmy on Sunday.
The decision came as the company could not implement environmental regulations, Fahmy told MENA. He noted that the company has been shut down for four months now.
He said that his ministry has a plan to adjust the conditions of old factories particularly those seriously affecting the environment.
As part of the plan, plants will have to commit to abiding by a set of environmental rules and requirements so that they will be allowed to resume production, he said.
Defaulters will negotiate with the concerned ministries on how to adjust their status and handle their emissions to meet environmental standards so that they will be allowed to continue operating, added the minister, citing the cases of private cement factories in Tora and Helwan.
As for factories that are near residential areas, a case study is done for each, and then the file of each and every one of them will be referred to the Cabinet to take a decision to close it or not, said Fahmy.
The procedures taken so far are stated by the environment law, he noted.(MENA)
