CAIRO – Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Board and Editor-in-Chief of al-Bawaba News Abdelrahim Ali said Sunday that the Palestinian militant group Hamas was part of terrorism in Sinai for a long time.
Hamas, he said, also tried to help Mohamed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood leader who later became Egypt’s president, break out of his jail cell during the January 25 revolution in 2011.
Ali added at a debate with some western journalists on private TV, al-Kahir Wal Nas, that Hamas dug dozens of tunnels between the Gaza Strip and Sinai to provide logistical support to terrorists in Sinai.
There is a social incubator for terrorism around this tunnel network in Sinai and in Gaza, Ali said.
He noted that Sinai tribes used their arms to confront the terrorists and back the Egyptian army in its battles against them.
He highlighted the importance of development for Sinai. He said this development will contribute to eradicating terrorism in Sinai altogether.
Ali said Hamas was financed by Qatar and Turkey for a long time.
