CAIRO – Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Board and Editor-in-Chief of al-Bawaba News Abdelrahim Ali said Sunday that Egypt’s constitution does not prevent Christians from running for the office of president of the republic.
The constitution in some countries, he said, bar non-Muslims from running in the presidential elections.
He added at a debate on private TV al-Kahir Wal Nas that the government cancelled out the old law on church construction and replaced it with a new one that made the construction of churches a lot easier.
He said Egypt does not discriminate against its Christian citizens, referring to the construction of a large church in the New Administrative Capital with donations from ordinary Egyptians.
