Egyptian security forces detained a man on Tuesday after an explosive device detonated near the US Embassy in central Cairo (in the Simon Bolivar Square), three security sources said.
A man who Egypt described as embracing “extremist ideas” was detained after a bottle containing flammable chemicals caught fire in his backpack.
The attempt revealed the weakness and decline of terrorist organizations in Egypt after receiving painful security strikes.
The attempt also raised widespread debate about the ideological and political affiliations behind the failed attempt, whether it is one of the alone wolf of Daesh, or Muslim Brotherhood attempt.
No casualties were reported, the sources said. Witnesses heard a blast and then saw a man with a backpack that had caught on fire close to the Semiramis Hotel, across the road from the embassy premises.
The man was then thrown to the ground by security forces as the fire was extinguished, the newspapers reported.
The US Embassy in Cairo said on its Twitter account that it was aware of a reported incident and asked people to avoid the area.
The area was cordoned off by security forces shortly after the incident and there was an unusually heavy police presence with dozens of officers nearby.
For his part, the expert on the Islamist movements and international terrorism, Maher Farghali, excluded any link between the bombing and Daesh, likely to say that the executor of the operation is a member of groups close to the Muslim Brotherhood.
Farghali ensured that the method of the operation is completely different from Daesh style, which focuses more on using explosive belts and suicide operations.
While Dr. Ali Bakr, an expert on terrorism and extremism, described this operation as an “aftershocks” that occur as a result of the desperation of the elements of the armed organizations.
He also said that Muslim Brotherhood composed of many groups such as “Hasm and the brigade of the revolution” became fragile and weak.
Bakr pointed out that the terrorist elements are carrying out what they call “the available jihad” to perform the duty according to their extremist belief.
Bakr explained that the surrender of the executor of the operation to the citizens and the security men without any resistance is contrary to the beliefs of these extremist organizations, which refuses to surrender.
