The peace talks between the Afghan Taliban and the US administration’s envoy for peace in Afghanistan Zalmay Khalil zad were not very easy for both sides. As each side sees it as the strongest on Afghan lands and has a strong and solid base against the other.
Commenting on the announcement by the Afghan Taliban a meeting on Saturday with a number of US officials in the Qatari capital of Doha to discuss the peace process in Afghanistan, Ali Bakr, a researcher in the affairs of terrorist movements, said that the idea of success or failure of negotiations lies in the idea of overcoming both obstacles before them. As one party must make concessions to the other so that the peace process moves easily.
Bakr sees that he does not like the idea that Daesh would be the weapon of America against the Taliban in case of the failure of the negotiations. Stressing that the ability of the Taliban movement on the Afghan territory is much greater than that of Daesh.
He said that the process of transformation in the negotiations and the US strategy with the Taliban is due to the US administration’s view that eliminating the movement through fighting is very difficult and to achieve on the ground, in the light of Taliban’s control of Kabul.
Trump also realized that the coalition with the Afghan government against Taliban movement had not yet been found. As for the Afghan government’s position on reconciliation, the government was weak and very fragile and was behind the US administration.
Ahmed Kamel al-Behiri, a researcher on terrorism affairs, points out that Trump’s administration had opened direct and indirect contact with the Taliban through the Qatari government, despite Washington’s closure of the Taliban office in Doha.
He explained in a statement to El Marga’a, that the military losses of the United States in the past period by the Taliban, had an impact on the transformation of the American strategy. Where America saw that the peace process in Afghanistan will be completed by sitting at the negotiations table with the movement.
Al-Behiri believes that the US administration has realized that Taliban are the only ones capable of preventing the expansion of Kabul in order to dominate the Afghan territories and the presence of loyalists in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Stressing that there is no full success or failure of the peace process. As it is necessary to reach a point of convergence on the axes that will be discussed in the negotiations.
