Suicide… the end of the Yemeni women in Al-Houthi prisons

The Yemen Organization for Combating Human Trafficking has revealed that two female abductees in Al-Houthi militia prisons in Sana’a suicide, pointing out that women detained in Al-Houthi’s prisons live in tragic and inhumane conditions and are subjected to torture and sexual abuse.

“The Yemen Organization for Combating Human Trafficking concerns  the regret the continuation of the Houthi group in committing the horrendous violations against women detainees, who live in tragic and inhuman conditions” the organization said in an official statement.

The organization added that the Houthi militia authorities refused to respond to humanitarian appeals to stop these practices that violate the humanity of victims of women; some of them committed suicide because of the torture and sexual abuse.

The Yemeni Organization documented the recent suicide of two women, one in a secret prison for militias and the other in the central prison during Ramadan.

The organization appealed to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the United Nations organizations concerned to visit the central prison in Sana’a.

“The suicide of two in detention camp confirms the extent of the criminal practices practiced against women prisoners as a whole and makes them choose to die after the militia smears their reputation and practices their right to abuse” the organization said.

The organization confirmed that it had previously identified two similar suicide cases documented by the organization, bringing the number of female suicide bombers in Houthi prisons to 4, and documented the attempt of 9 other prisoners to commit suicide as well.

The Houthi militia transferred more than 90 women from secret prisons to the central prison in Sana’a, changing the guardianship of the women’s section and replacing guards from female police with female Houthi, known as the Zinbiyat. The prison authorities prevent visits to women prisoners and to take strict measures against them.

He stressed that the crimes committed against women detained in Al-Houthi prisons are a continuation of those crimes which The Yemen Organization for Combating Human Trafficking had previously uncovered about 200 women and girls in secret prisons of the Houthis before being transferred to the central prison.

The Yemen Organization for Combating Human Trafficking confirmed that it has received many calls from inside the prisons of women and relatives of detainees.

The organization renewed its appeal to the Red Cross and international organizations concerned to visit women’s prisons and places of detention, to work to lift their suffering and to stop their inhumane abuses.
