Following the victory of candidate Mohammad Ould Ghazouani in Mauritania’s presidential election, protests and riot swept the country. A number of Tawassul Party, the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood, members were detained
The Mauritanian authorities detained Ahmedou Ould al-Wadea, a media anchor and senior leader of Tawassul for inciting chaos as he claimed that the presidential polls were rigged.
Al-Wadea is a member of the Tawassul Party’s executive office and is known for his controversial opinions, instigating extremist and racial divisions.
As a journalist, al-Wadea took advantage of the social media to instigate violence and chaos.
Mauritanian author and researcher al-Mahdi Mohie Eddin said al-Wadea had called for violence and threatening his political foes via the social media.
Mohammad Jamil Mansour, the former chairman of Tawassul Party, has congratulated president-elect Mohammad Ould Ghazouani, while the party’s current leaders signed a statement with the opposition rejecting the results.
Mohamed Mahmoud, the chairman of Tawassul Party, signed a statement of the opposition without consulting the party’s executive office. Some members considered the signing the statement a wrong move. It’s noteworthy that results announced at the polling stations matched the counts of an independent commission.
Mohammad Jamil Mansour, the former chairman of Tawassul Party, has recently criticized the Muslim Brotherhood leaders for backing candidate Mohamed Ould Boubacar, Mauritania’s former prime minister.
