Yemen has been one of the main strongholds of al-Qaeda terrorist organization for nearly twenty years (since the beginning of the present century). The Yemeni army has frequently launched military campaigns – both before and after the so-called Arab Spring Revolutions. But the organization is still – despite all the previous campaigns – difficult to defeat, especially in light of the suffering suffered by Yemen in poor situations ignited by the Houthi militias years ago.
New appearance
Al-Qaeda in Yemen attacked al-Muhafad camp of the security forces in the village of Al-Mufad in the southern province of Abyan on Friday, August 2, 2019. At least 19 soldiers were killed and the terrorist organization controlled the camp for hours before Yemeni forces regained control, according to a security source in statements to Reuters.
The two parties clashed for a long time, at dawn on Friday, after the surprise attack by al-Qaeda elements on the camp; killing dozens of the parties, and it was the confrontation after the intervention of Apache helicopters of the Arab Alliance to support the legitimacy of the leadership of Saudi Arabia alongside the Yemeni army forces, to the intervention of the Shaban elite forces, the military reserve of the security belt forces.
The attack is the second of its kind witnessed by the Yemeni provinces in just two days. A car bomb, on Thursday, August 1, 2019, exploded in a camp of security forces in the port of Aden, in southern Yemen; killing 13 policemen, and wounding dozens.
America warns
The attacks come as US State Department counterterrorism coordinator Nathan Sills confirmed in a press briefing on Friday, August 2, 2019, that al-Qaeda has managed in recent years to rearrange its ranks and remains a major threat to states as it was in the past.
He added that al-Qaeda and its affiliates are still an influential force in various regions of the world, mainly the organization’s activities in Yemen; where it controls its territory.
Sills said that the recent silence of al-Qaeda can not be seen as an indication of the organization’s departure from the arena, pointing out that it must continue to be fought by all countries around the world.
Terrorist coordination: Iran, Turkey and Qatar
“The terrorist operations in Yemen are carried out by Turkey, Qatar and Iran,” said Brigadier General Faisal Hilboub, a Yemeni political expert. He said that al-Houthi, al-Qaeda and others were coordinated, as in the recent Aden attack.
The Yemeni expert pointed out that the terrorist leaders who were taken out of the prisons of Sana’a by the Huthis are covering the crimes of Houthi and try to relieve the pressure on them.
He said that the large military campaign that inflicted major defeats on al-Qaeda in Abyan governorate was expected to make its leaders and elements at the top of the list.
